Notes: My claim was for "holiday cliches". You know, building a snow fort, getting drunk on egg nog and having special confessions and so on and so forth? Um. There is a snowball fight. And... sex. However a reasonable dose of angst crept in when I wasn't looking.

So I eventually got around to watching Stronghold today. And wow, but Baal is quite the motivational speaker...
I'm not asking you to worship me. I do not plan to undermine your freedom. I care nothing for your rites and traditions or what you wish to do with your daily lives. What I do not want to see happen is the utter subjugation of this entire galaxy at the hands of the Ori. That would be an utter shame for all of us. Don't make this personal, Teal'c. Your people are in need, and I can help them. I can help all of us defend ourselves against the Ori.
Teal'c is definitely made of sterner stuff than me, because I found myself nodding in complete agreement, even though I was aware that there were several lies sewn neatly alongside a good portion of truth. Even though I know he is a conniving, insidious git.

I find it odd to hear the symbiotic grate. I guess I'm too used to his human voice (though can he say "chat" again please? God, that accent is scrummy. Um...) but here it's presented very much as the pretense: Baal knows full well that Teal'c won't respond to the "false god", but it's all in the delivery. He drops the pretense and then immediately brings up the Ori. Nice move, very clever.

To be honest, I'm not sure how genuine Baal was really being. Yes, the Ori are a very real threat - to the Jaffa, to Earth and to his own forces. Yes, he doesn't have the numbers without the support of the Jaffa Council. And yes, Baal has the cunning and strategic ability to lead a sizable force and (very probably) defeat the Ori. What is questionable are his motives - I highly doubt the future of the galaxy is much of a concern, except he doesn't want to lose power to a species such as the Ori.

I think he's doing something he does frequently over seasons nine and ten - he's sort of trying to do the right thing, but really going completely the wrong way about it. Mainly because the "right" thing is for his own gain.

And he gives that out himself, in arguing with Teal'c about how "reasonable" he is...
I've tried to be nice. I've tried to present reason, convince you in a most merciful fashion.
Yeah, because kidnap, torture and attempted brainwashing are just lovely, Baal. I do wonder if he actually listens to what comes out of his mouth at times. Or if he just doesn't understand the contrary nature of those things.

ETA: have to say, love the outfit he wears in this episode. It's very Steampunk *nods*
