Double Drabble - 200 words exactamondo

He opens the door to a dimly-lit yard. Checking the detector, he traces the signal to a building. The fire door is ajar. Most likely someone's sneaked out for a quick cigrette and forgotten to shut it.

Luck. Fate. Call it what you will. Serendipity. It's a chance he takes.

The signal gets stronger once he's inside. He nods to himself, knowing he has to be careful, he creeps down corridors.

Then there's a room and the body of a man. He checks the name badge. It reads “Wilson”.

“Sorry mate,” he tells the dead man. Too little, too late.

He checks the detector again. Must be the roof. He starts up the stairs; taking them two at a time. The he stops dead.

“Wilson! Wilson?” A voice. A girl's voice. They can hear her too; he knows this. It shouldn't matter – it's just one – and there are hundreds, thousands that need saving.

He hears her call out again. There's something in her tone that borders on panic. And he doesn't think twice, running back down, tracing her with ease. They're almost on top of her. Talk about nick of time. It's his trademark.

He grabs her hand.

“Run!”
